The term ‘personification’ used to describe Hannah’s artistic practice is done so within a paradoxical manner. They attribute emotions to a tangible form – the artwork – using the humanistic qualities within the gestures and colours of the piece to become the descriptors for an otherwise abstract concept.
By embracing automatic techniques, subliminal habits and the subconscious of the mind and body come forward. They become a material itself in this performative process, with the artworks becoming physical manifestations left behind of the captured emotional and mental state.
A practice spanning many years, Hannah has begun to identify and develop a visual language from their work, with marks and colours corresponding to their own associated emotions.
‘Yellow is not the joy of a warm sun on a lonely day . . . it is instead the meaning of a frenzied itch beneath the skin . . . when thoughts overlap and whispers seem abundant.’
Even nuances, such as shades, become further investigations into how environmental, societal and relational factors can change these meanings.
What emotion does the colour yellow bring for you?
